How to Maximize Fuel Economy

gas pumpOver the past couple decades increasing rates for fuel have been an increasing concern, and when the economic crisis hit in 2008 people really started to feel the effects while paying at the gas tank. Add in the growing anxiety over the future of the planet as evidence of climate change continues to mount, and it’s no wonder people have started to think about how to save money on gas. If you’re looking for a fuel-efficient car in Saskatchewan, stop by Crestview Chrysler in Regina!

Get the Right Car

The first and most obvious way to maximize fuel economy is to make sure you’re purchasing a model that is as fuel efficient as possible while still meeting your needs as a driver. In recent years, consumers have started to see that the auto industry can deliver the best of both worlds. Increasing fuel efficiency standards and consumer demand for competitive performance have led manufacturers to get innovative. New technologies are being developed every day to maximize both the efficiency and power of powertrains. While it certainly makes sense that you want a car with some pick up, it’s also a good idea to check the fuel economy on your next big auto purchase before you sign on the dotted line.

Before Driving

Before you put the pedal to the metal, there are a few important things you should make sure you’re doing to keep your car in good condition to increase your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

Regular tune-ups – Making sure your vehicle gets the maintenance it needs is essential to increasing the life of your car and getting the biggest bang for your buck at the gas tank. Suggested times for regular oil changes, air-filter changes, and spark plug replacements are in the owner’s manual you got with the car. You can schedule a service appointment online whenever you are due for service.

Tire Pressure and Alignment – Having adequate tire pressure and proper alignment will increase fuel efficiency and lead to a safer and more comfortable ride.

Shed Weight – If you have things that you don’t need in your car, take them out and put them in the garage or in the house. 100 pounds of weight decreases your vehicle’s fuel economy by 1-2 percent.

On the Road

Once you’re behind the wheel, there are a couple of simple things you can do to increase fuel efficiency. First off, don’t drive excessively. Rapid acceleration and maintaining higher speeds than necessary can increase your fuel economy by up to 25%. Also, make sure to turn off your vehicle when you’re sitting at the train tracks, waiting for someone to come to the car, or idling for any reason for longer than a minute.

What is a Low-Energy Vehicle?

Crestview ChryslerAt our Regina-area Dodge dealership, we sell more and more low-energy vehicles as the days go by. You have certainly heard of low-energy vehicles before, though you may not have known the term. LEVs are cars that are designed to use less power than a normal car to try to lower the dependency on gasoline and reduce emissions. These include hybrid cars, electric vehicles, and other alternatively-fueled vehicles. While once an anomaly, they now come in all shapes and sizes: compacts, sedans, and even pickup trucks.

Hybrid Cars

One of the types of LEVs that’s made a substantial impact, the hybrid car uses a combination of gas and electricity to operate the car. The more electricity the car uses, the more it cuts down on gas usage. Many types of these vehicles, like new Dodge hybrid cars, use only electricity at lower speeds (when you drive around town) and then save the gas for when you hit the highway. Of course, there are also all-electric vehicles available. Hybrids cars also feature other types of technology, such as regenerative braking, to further reduce energy costs.

While some drivers were were turned off by hybrids due to the initially unusual shapes and prohibitive costs,  they are now a regular staple of showrooms after adopting more common designs and affordable pricing. Many models feature a hybrid option, and there’s really no reason why you wouldn’t want to get one. Who doesn’t love paying less for gas?

Alternative Fuel LEVs

There are also a few other low-energy vehicles available on the market, using alternative fuels like hydrogen and ethanol, but they are not as widely used as hybrids. Hydrogen gas is everywhere, and when used as a fuel, produces water as a byproduct instead of pollutants. Unfortunately, the process of using it for fuel can still be expensive, and many drivers are dubious of its safety, despite evidence that hyrdogen-powered cars are often safer than traditional cars.

The same is true of ethanol, which is made from plants and has appeared as E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and gasoline. Scientists are constantly working on these new technologies, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself driving a corn-powered car in the future.
